Chapter 1 · 1 min
A Parcel That Must Not Be Opened
The parcel was lighter than a secret and heavier than a mistake. Nuria strapped it to the bike and checked the seal twice. Lotus Protocol. Deliver closed. The minute is not a coin.
The city charged qi by the meter, a soft toll that prickled in the wrists when you crossed a paid block. Couriers learned to coast. Coasting was a kind of poverty and a kind of skill.
At the second canal a man kept pace on foot, which meant he was spending more than she was. “I’ll pay the toll and your week,” he said. “Open it on the bridge. I only need to see that it’s breathing.”
“If it’s breathing, I’m definitely not opening it.” Nuria stood on the pedals. The bike hummed, illegal and quick, through a yellow meter into a green one. Behind her the man did not sprint. He smiled like someone who had already paid for the next bridge too.
