The Erased Name

The next morning the notebook had one more page. Lin had not copied it. It was blank except for a smear of ash in the shape of a character: a name left unfinished, as if someone had hesitated while signing.

He looked the name up in the sect register. The eight seals before it had a master, a date, and a disciple. The ninth had a stroke. Under it, in another ink, someone had written do not pronounce.

“If they erased it,” he said to the librarian, “why ask me to copy it?”

The librarian looked at the ash and his shoulders loosened. “Because what is struck from a register stays in the ink. Someone has to put it back on paper before it finds another mouth.”

That night Lin did not eat. He copied the smear as well as he could. When the copy dried, it finished the character on its own. The name was short. It sounded like a person, not a spell. And from the corridor, very low, someone repeated it.
