The Patient Who Does Not Bleed
The translation took until night. Lin moved the order from the meridian to a higher shelf, under the ribs, where a memory can live without ruling the hand. The uncle lifted the cup. Tea went where tea should. He did not smile.
“You’ll be able to pour,” Lin said. “Fighting is another visit, and I don’t offer it.”
At the door the girl held out a bundle of green bamboo, cut from the part that was still growing. “For your pack. The broken one is too loud.”
Lin accepted. As he tied it, he felt a second presence on the forest path, standing among the canes, with the pulse of someone who has come to check whether his technique is still where he left it.
He did not turn around. He told the uncle to sleep facing the house, not the grove, and he stayed on the step until the presence grew bored with not being feared.
