Bamboo That Will Not Straighten
The broken bamboo did not straighten in the wind. The wind passed through the cuts and sounded like a flute closed badly. Lin set his bundle on a dry stone and waited for the village to decide he was not a bandit.
A girl came out. “My uncle doesn’t bleed,” she said. “But he can’t lift the cup with his right hand. He says it isn’t a matter for an herb doctor.”
“Herbs are also for what you can’t see.” Lin shouldered the bundle. “Take me there before he decides the left hand is enough forever.”
The uncle sat facing the grove. His deep pulse was silent, like a string that had been asked not to vibrate. It was not disease. It was an order tucked under the skin, elegant and sure of itself.
