The Inn That Is Not on the Map
There was an inn where the map had no right to have anything. The keeper served soup and did not ask his name, which anywhere else would have been rude and here was a courtesy so large it almost bowed.
“The ones who write stay on as cooks,” she said. “The ones who don’t leave halfway through the soup and later can’t explain the hunger. You decide before the second bowl.”
Kenzo looked at the pencil, which had climbed out of the pack on its own and rested beside the bread. He covered it with the napkin. “I want to cross. My aunt left a note. I don’t know if it was a warning or a will.”
“It was both. She stayed long enough to write the margin and then had the good sense to leave mid-sentence. The valley hates finished sentences. Sleep. Tomorrow the fog will be offended and therefore honest.”
