The Master Who Does Not Teach
There was no lesson. There was a cup of cold tea and the librarian sitting the wrong way around, facing the door, as if waiting for someone who was already inside.
“I am not going to teach you to fight,” he said. “The sect forgot those manuals on purpose. I am going to teach you to stop in time. There are lines that, if you copy them whole, stop being history and become an order.”
Lin asked what the difference was. The librarian pushed the cup. Ash floated on the tea, and the ash did not sink.
“History fits in a cup. An order does not. If some night the ink asks you for the fifth page too early, you get up and come find me. Even if I do not answer.”
Lin nodded. That night the ink asked for nothing. At dawn he discovered that this, too, was a way of asking.
