The Duel That Was Not Announced

She was already there, coat blacker for being wet, hair tied with a strip of ledger paper. No banner. No seconds. The city had decided this one did not need an audience that could later be asked what it saw.

“You are late by a year,” she said.

“The road was longer than the insult.” Seo set his feet where the mud would hold. “Say it again, if you still want it paid in steel.”

She did not repeat the insult. She drew. The first exchange was quiet, the way rain is quiet when you are inside it. Sparks did not survive the weather. What survived was the fact that neither of them stepped back.

On the third pass she turned her wrist and stopped, blade a finger from his collar. “Not today,” she said. “The city wants a corpse it can explain. I want the debt, not their story.” She sheathed. The square pretended to resume being a square.
